Beautiful British Columbia
The license plate says it all for our northern neighbor--"Beautiful British Columbia"--for indeed, it is JUST THAT! The people in this lush province take the earth and all its inhabitants very seriously. With every turn around a corner on my trip to Victoria, the Gulf Islands (especially Salt Spring Island) and Vancouver, my heart skipped a beat and my mouth was constantly agape. Everything was lush, verdant, pulsing and clean. My wife and I noticed how well-kept the public domain was. Unsightly trash was not something seen in Victoria and the Gulf Islands. Using only what one needed was the primary and unwritten rule. (Greed is looked down upon. Yeah!!) Utilizing trash bins with separate receptacles for compost, paper recycling, plastic recycling and regular refuse was strictly followed. Even tourists would stop and pay attention to the trash bins, ensuring that they used the proper receptacle for their waste.
Doing errands without one's reusable bags was a no-no. We even saw signs reminding Victorians to use their bags. BYOB means Bring Your Own Bags, not Bring Your Own Booze! Carrying your own water bottle was routine. (Thankfully, we brought our Nalgene bottles, Contigo coffee cups, sporks and shopping bags on our trip as we had heard about the serious eco-culture. We were so grateful to not be the "Ugly Americans" who only consume and throw away the remains.)
If it wasn't for our wee little company trying to change behavior in this country "one soap, one lotion, one balm, one bar at a time," we'd still be in Canada! But we're back from our silent retreat, whale watching and touring--ready and committed to a more beautiful U.S. with Do Good Soaps and Suds.
If you haven't followed us on Instagram and Facebook, please do so! Our posts are always positive and informative--much better than all the political things that stuff your mailbox and news streams! Facebook is @DoGoodSoaps and Instagram is DoGoodSoapsAndSuds. We post eco-friendly tips, quotes and Do Good actions that we each can take to make the world better and better for our kids. Hey, and share your love of the earth AND Do Good Soaps and Suds with your friends. As always, thank you, dear ones. (Go to British Columbia the next time you want to get away from all the craziness! I promise you that it will bring you a new take on life!)
